YARMOUTH, Mass. — Hundreds turned out to honor fallen Yarmouth Police Sergeant Sean Gannon on Sunday in a special way.

The Yarmouth Dennis Red Sox played a game in honor of Sgt. Gannon, who was shot and killed while serving a warrant in Marstons Mills.

The event, Gannon Strong, was more than just a baseball game, it was a way for the Yarmouth Police Department to give back and remember one of their own.

K9 Nero, Sgt. Gannon's partner, was also shot back in April, but survived. Nero, who has now recovered, was there to watch as the police chief threw the first pitch.

"It's quite amazing, and this is quite a tribute," said Yarmouth Police Chief Frank Fredrickson.

The team also designed pins in honor of Sgt. Gannon. Not only are they going to wear them all season long, but they will be selling them and all proceeds will go toward the Yarmouth Police Foundation.

"I think that’s what Sean would have wanted," said Karen Wren, of Yarmouth. "I think Yarmouth has really come together from this tragedy and something good maybe can come out of it, that’s what we are hoping for."

Like many others in the crowd, Wren didn't know Sgt. Gannon personally, but said that supporting the police department was just something she felt compelled to do.

"Hopefully it can be the benefit of the entire Cape Cod community," said Chuck Sturtevant, the Cape Cod Baseball League President.

The event was proof that, much alike the police, baseball is a brotherhood in it's own way.

"It gives us a little bit of strength, that we know that we can get through this and that there’s more work to be done in Sean’s honor," said Chief Fredrickson.
