Great news for commuters on the South Shore.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority said the Hingham Ferry dock finally reopened Monday.
Ferry service between Hingham and Boston has been suspended for more than a week because of damage to the dock caused by thick ice.
The waters in Hingham Bay froze around the dock’s pilings, causing them to buckle and the dock was structurally unsafe.
The ice was so thick that it kept contractors from assessing the damage for days.
One week ago, a crew evaluated that damage to the dock and sent a diver into the water to look at the damage beneath the surface.
The repairs had been underway ever since, and the general manager of the MBTA tweeted out about the progress.
Ultimately the entire dock system was moved two feet forward from where it had been, and additional piles were installed and everything was reconnected.
The conditions that caused the damage to the dock were so severe, even fuel barges couldn’t make it into the area without the help of the Coast Guard because ice was so thick.
