Which Massachusetts counties are ‘high-risk’ for COVID-19 transmission?

BOSTON — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is tracking areas across the United States that have a substantial or high risk for COVID-19 transmission, following an outbreak on Cape Cod that left nearly 900 people with the virus, including some who had been fully vaccinated.

Last week, the CDC recommended that vaccinated individuals resume wearing masks indoors as the delta variant spreads.

So which areas in Massachusetts are at an increased risk? According to the latest CDC data:

  • Berkshire - Substantial
  • Bristol - High
  • Dukes - High
  • Essex - Substantial
  • Franklin - Moderate
  • Hampden - Substantial
  • Hampshire - Moderate
  • Middlesex - Substantial
  • Nantucket - High
  • Norfolk - Substantial
  • Plymouth - Substantial
  • Suffolk - Substantial
  • Worcester - Substantial

After the CDC’s new guidance, Boston 25 News asked Governor Charlie Baker if he had plans to reimplement a state mask mandate. He told us they are reviewing the guidance and consulting multiple experts to make the “big decision.”
