WEYMOUTH, Mass. — Jack Doherty believes in “Resilience 2020” so deeply that he wears the slogan across his chest.
In fact, the owner of the Weymouth-and Dorchester-based screenprint and embroidery company College Hype wants others to wear that slogan proudly as well: Doherty and his company have raised $25,000 for local hospitals over the past month by selling nearly 1,200 of the “Resilience” shirts they designed.
“It dawned on us in March. We said, ‘Maybe we could raise a couple thousand dollars by selling these,’” said Doherty, who has already cut $10,000 checks each to Boston Medical Center and South Shore Hospital, and plans to write another $5,000 check to South Shore by the end of the week.
“It’s going to go directly to buy PPE [personal protective equipment] for the nurses and doctors, so it’s a feelgood thing.”

With the Massachusetts stay-at-home advisory keeping College Hype’s physical doors closed, Doherty and some of his furloughed employees have been volunteering their time to get the word out through an online pop-up store.
Helping South Shore Hospital, in particular, was an easy choice, Doherty said. Six years ago, Doherty said he went into cardiac arrest during an adult hockey game and if not for his friends at the scene and the quick help of South Shore Hospital, he may not have survived.
“Like the old saying, you need to give back, or you should give back,” he said. “God bless the nurses and doctors out there.”
