Salem restaurant workers surprised with cash donations

SALEM, Mass. — Scott Sheehan is surprising dozens of restaurant workers in Salem with some cash.

On Sunday, he stopped at Rockafella’s to surprise waiter Anthony Dalbon.

Sheehan saw someone donating money to restaurant workers in Pennsylvania and decided to bring the idea to Salem.

“So we started a GoFundMe page, we thought we’d get a couple hundred dollars,” said Sheehan. “It’s up to over 7,000 dollars today.”

Over the last few weeks, Sheehan and a few others have handed out 100 dollars in cash to more than 50 restaurant workers.

“Just to bring a smile to people’s faces and let them know the community is behind them,” said Sheehan.

He says most of the money is raised by people in Salem who want to support the industry hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I think it’s fantastic I mean every little bit especially during this time helps where everyone’s feeling the hardships of it,” said Deven Kenison, manager at Rockafella’s.

“It’s not nothing, it’s definitely helping me out a lot,” said Anthony Dalbon, who was surprised by 100 dollars Sunday. “I really needed it actually, it’s been really slow around here, I have to pay for school myself, I have to pay for everything so it’s actually really awesome that I got this.”

Sheehan says so far about 150 people have donated to this fund, and they’ll keep handing out money until the donations run out.

“We’re hoping it’ll catch on maybe some other people will do it in their town,” said Sheehan. “It really brings a lot of joy especially in these cold winter months.”
