SAUGUS, Mass. — The Kowloon restaurant in Saugus, a staple on Route 1, will now allow indoor dining, but on Thursday they unveiled their carhop service.

Guests are able to bring their own lawn chairs while listening to music and ordering food.

“Very excited to be out, it’s like the first live concert!” said Beth Knicely of Gloucester.

Owner Bob Wong said the idea for the carhop came from the months during the shutdown when the restaurant could only offer takeout service.

“They would take their food and sit in the parking lot with three or four cars and they would circle the cars around, everybody would sit outside, social distance and they would eat their food and I said, gee that would be a good idea!” said Wong.

The lot has transformed into an outdoor space where guests can spread out with their own lawn chairs or use the tables that have been set up and measured out with a safe distance from the rest.

“They can park their cars and give them a piece of turf and spread out bring a blanket,” said Wong.

Guests can order drinks and dinner from their servers while listening to live music. The giant screen will soon be showing popular movies throughout the summer. If Boston sports resume, they will show games as well.

“This is going to be great! The movie theater as well, I think it’s wonderful. I mean why not? You can’t go inside this is great to be outdoors!” said Jean Marie Martin of Peabody.
