MENDON, Mass. — Dave Andelman said he couldn’t wait to reopen his drive-in movie theater in Mendon after they were forced to close for the last couple months because of COVID-19.

“Families need fun, affordable, safe entertainment,” said Andelman, who owns Mendon Twin Drive-In with his brothers. “I knew if we were open, they would come out and they’re coming out.”

Gov. Baker is allowing drive-ins to reopen Monday, so Andelman scheduled the first showing at midnight Sunday. He said that showing and Monday night’s movies are already sold out.

“When they said we could open it looked like when there used to be school cancellations, when your brothers are going all over the house going insane, that was my brothers and I. We were so excited, we decided, ‘okay you’re going to let us open at midnight, we’ll open at midnight,’” Andelman said.

Andelman said his team made some changes at the drive-in over the last few weeks to make sure the property was clean, sanitized and encouraged safety to prevent the virus from spreading.

“The parking spaces are 12 feet apart, we use fences, cones, poles, spray paint to create distancing, we have a new app to do your food, tickets are online, staffs are in gloves and masks,” Andelman said. “I really think we’re setting a new standard for safety. I’m very proud of what we’re doing.”
