DANVERS, Mass. — Why did hundreds of people show up at a mass vaccination site in Danvers if they didn’t have an appointment?
We asked people in the long line. “I have a friend who works here who said there was going to be extra we got into a Lyft and have been here for several hours,” said Elizabeth Weinbloom.
That word quickly spread around town today not once, but twice, as hundreds of people lined up for a second time later Wednesday night. Some who aren’t even eligible to be vaccinated, like Matt Depamphilis from Danvers. “I’m in Danvers and a friend texted and said they have extra shots,” said Depamphilis.
But according to Curative Care, the company overseeing the Danvers site that information is false. In a statement they told Boston 25 News, “Curative offered patients who were already registered with appointments later in the week to come to the Danvers location to receive their dose today.”
But even those eligible people couldn’t get in because of the huge crowds. “Well I don’t think people 75 and older should be out in 30-degree weather. First of all, I think that’s ridiculous,” said Elaine Hondorf.
Hondorf showed us her email from Curative. But after waiting for an hour she was cold and tired and went home. She will be back Thursday for her scheduled vaccination appointment.
Still, others with no appointment continued to wait hoping to get the vaccine. We asked if it was worth the wait. “We’ve been inside for a year. So sure,” said Depamphilis.
Depamphilis continued to wait. At one point 150 were allowed inside but it’s unclear if they were just let in to keep warm or actually get a shot. Depamphilis was not among them.
