COHASSET, Mass. — Cohasset High and Middle Schools will revert back to remote learning after police broke up a house party Friday night.

“I am not that happy about it, I feel like I was just starting to get in a routine,” said Gabrielle Kennedy, a senior at Cohasset High School.

Kennedy said she was just getting used to the hybrid-learning model at school, but now the Cohasset Public Schools superintendent announced Saturday that both the high school and middle school will switch back to fully remote for the next two weeks starting Monday, November 16.

“I’m not blaming anyone at the party because I’m one of those kids, I want to party,” Kennedy said. “And I’m not trying to put any blame on them, it was just really hard to hear that.”

Schools will close as a precaution after police busted a party on Jerusalem Road Friday night. Police said at least 20 teens weren’t wearing masks or social distancing and a few ran away when they showed up.

“It was sad actually because we could have gone in school, but some of the kids at the party ran into the woods,” Kennedy said. “The police couldn’t get their names, so they just have to assume everyone at school might have been there.”

Superintendent Patrick Sullivan said all students at that party should go get tested for COVID-19.

“So, while undesirable, this temporary adjustment may serve as a real-life reiteration of the social responsibility that we seek to instill in our students,” Sullivan said in a letter to families. “While this is, thankfully, the first situation of this nature since the start of school (and hopefully the last), the district will consider school disciplinary measures for any future similar conduct, just as it would with any infraction that either recklessly or intentionally disrupts school operations.”

“It’s a shame because, you know, at that age, I know how much I enjoyed spending time with my friends,” said Chris Fiddner, a father. “And to take that away from kids, it’s a tough decision.”

Cohasset Police issued a $500 fine to the homeowners of that house party since they didn’t follow the governor’s new order of limiting indoor gatherings to 10 people.

“They probably don’t want to do that either, but if they don’t have a repercussion then what’s to stop other people from doing it,” Fiddner said.

“I really feel like this was kind of like a wake-up call because the police were involved with that,” Kennedy said.
