BOSTON — Plans to reopen the economy in Massachusetts are now partially in the hands of local leaders, officials and business executives.
Governor Charlie Baker appointed a 17-member advisory board, which held its first Zoom meeting on Tuesday. It includes 12 business leaders from across the state who will likely play an integral role in the state getting back up and running.
Steve DiFillippo, owner of Davio’s Restaurants, is among the business executives on the board.
“They want to have people from the industry," said DiFillippo. “People who are going to have to deal with the issues and all the rules. Putting this council together is brilliant. The more minds, the better.”
DiFillippo told Boston 25 News the first board meeting lasted about an hour and a half. He expects they’ll be meeting virtually daily to discuss strategies regarding potential reopening plans.
“Everyone’s so committed, and everyone wants to help,” he said. “I think everyone wants to get back, and everyone on the board is committed to do it fast and quick but also safely.”
The group will seek input over the next three weeks to develop a report by May 18th. However, DiFillippo said the reopening date will ultimately be decided by public health data and guidance from health care experts.
“I hope it’s June, if it’s not and it has to be July then it has to be July," said DiFillippo. “We have one shot to open these businesses really well, and I would hate to open up too early and then have to shut down again.”
DiFillippo said he’s had death in his family and people close to him pass away during the outbreak. He said he understands the hardship so many are facing but is asking everyone to try to remain patient.
“This has been very difficult," said DiFillippo. "We’ve got to get through this. We have to, we’re Americans. We’re going to win. We just have to stick together.”
