BOSTON — Among President Joe Biden’s first actions in office Wednesday was signing several executive orders, including calling for a federal moratorium on coronavirus-related evictions and foreclosures to be extended through March 31.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s current eviction ban, implemented in Sept., expires Jan. 31 – an extension from the latest stimulus bill.
The Biden administration called the situation an “unprecedented housing affordability crisis,” with one in five renters and one in ten homeowners behind on their payments.
Because the ban does not cancel rent, Biden urged Congress to pass a COVID relief bill that would include $35 billion in rent, utility and homelessness assistance, CNN reported.
Massachusetts’ eviction moratorium ended in October, and the national ban then kicked in for qualified tenants who wrote letters to their landlords.
The City of Boston’s eviction moratorium was extended through February.
