BCEC transforms into ‘Boston Hope’ field hospital in anticipation of COVID-19 surge

BOSTON — The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center is now open under the name of “Boston Hope” Medical Center.

The 516,000 square feet of space is now a field hospital to help Boston and the state deal with the health crisis. Mayor Marty Walsh told Boston 25 News Reporter Robert Goulston on the phone that this “this was literally done in four days and having everyone come together. It’s just amazing to see it all come together."

There are 1,000 beds, more than 50 nursing stations, a half a dozen acute care stations and a physical therapy suite.

Mayor Walsh says “they were working on training staff ensuring that there was proper PPE supplies, going over the protocols and anything else they had to do before the first patient came in through the front door."

The first patients could be arriving in the coming days.
