BOSTON — AMC officially reopened eight of its Massachusetts theaters for the first time on Thursday, offering 15 cent tickets to celebrate the occasion.
All 19 showings at the AMC on Boston Common were sold out. However, the atmosphere inside was quiet and socially distanced throughout the evening.
Boston 25 News ventured inside AMC to get a firsthand look and to speak with those who came out.
“I was very impressed. It was nice and clean and not too many people,” said Sonia Mejia of Chelsea. “They are following the capacity and the rules. I like it.”
A maximum of 25 people are allowed inside each auditorium. Customers are automatically spaced apart through the contactless ticketing system.
“I do feel really safe,” said Kelly Becerra of Everett, who came out with her 4 year old daughter. “I feel like it’s something we’ve been missing for a while. It’s summer time. We need to finally enjoy it!”
Customers in groups of up to 10 people may sit together. Boston 25 News spoke with some who purchased additional tickets to ensure even more space for their first time back at the movies.
“As long as we keep our mask on while walking in, we should be fine,” said Angela McBride of Everett.
Vending stands are closed for the time being.
Those who Boston 25 News spoke with said they were pleased by the amount of cleaning wipes, sanitizer and cleaning crews they saw on site.
Showcase Cinemas is next large movie chain expected to reopen across the state on Aug. 28.
