Head-on crash marks 3rd incident in as many days at East St bridge

WESTWOOD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A head-on collision underneath the East Street bridge marks the third incident at that spot in three days.

Wednesday morning, the Westwood Police Department responded to a two-car crash at the bridge at around 9 a.m. Surveillance video that captured the crash shows one car hitting a stone curb with its tire before entering the narrow bridge. The car then veers into the middle of the road, hitting the other car head on.

The impact turned the cars sideways, facing each other and blocking access to the bridge. Police closed East Street for a time Wednesday morning while they cleared the crash. There was no word on whether either driver suffered any injuries, though both appeared to be able to get out of their cars without assistance.

On Tuesday morning, at around 4:50 a.m., a 13-foot box truck carrying lobsters and other seafood got stuck under the 10"6' bridge, and its air conditioner compressor caught fire. The fire caused a large plume of smoke to envelop the area. Officials worked to clear the scene, but while inspectors worked to make sure the bridge was structurally sound, commuter rail service on the Franklin line was suspended until 8 a.m.

Monday morning, another large truck attempted to pass under the bridge at around 9 a.m. That truck did not catch fire, but the truck's roof and sides were ripped from the bed of the truck.
