BOSTON — Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker faced off his challenger Jay Gonzalez in a heated debate Tuesday night.
Supporters for both candidates rallied outside before the debate began.
Gonzalez spent much of the hour-long debate on the attack, using the term "status quo" at least a dozen times when referring to Gov. Baker and talked about "fighting for the little guy."
Gonzalez touted his experience as the state budget chief under former Governor Deval Patrick. Gonzalez believes the state is not spending enough on things like transportation, education and gas pipeline safety.
Gov. Baker, however, remains the most popular governor in the country, creating an issue for Gonzalez, who is still struggling with name recognition.
Gonzalez was also highly critical of Gov. Baker's oversight of the MBTA.
Gov. Baker his administration is spending billions on the MBTA's core infrastructure and says the work currently being done is "not sexy" but it's what's required to get the T to where it needs to be.
Right now, Gov. Baker is the clear front runner in the polls, leaving Gonzalez with a lot of ground to make up for in short time with the election just 28 days way.
Another topic that came up during the debate was the State Police overtime abuse scandal, where Gonzalez said he would take quick action if elected.
Gonzalez also promised to raise taxes on the wealthy as a way to pay for billions in spending.
