Gloucester police say pipe bomb-like device found in field

GLOUCESTER, Mass. — A suspicious device found in Gloucester could be a pipe bomb, police say.

According to police, the Mass. Environmental Police were working in a field on Farrington Avenue shortly before 11 a.m. when they found what they say looked like an explosive device made from PVC piping.

The Gloucester Police Department launched an investigation after the device was found Thursday morning. Officers arrived on scene to find the one-inch by six-inch device with a burn mark down one side, which police say is consistent with a fuse or wick burn.

Police say the pipe looked to be filled with a cement-like substance on one side, but hollow on the other.

The Mass. State Police Bomb Squad was also on scene and said the device had already been detonated and was no longer dangerous.
