Game 3 was nowhere close to the longest game played by Red Sox

BOSTON — At 3:31 a.m. Eastern Time Saturday morning, Max Muncy went yard off Nathan Eovaldi, ending the longest World Series game of all time in the 18th inning.

The Red Sox, who led the series 2-0 coming into the first game at Dodger Stadium looked beat.

They were tired, exhausted and crestfallen at letting the opportunity for a commanding 3-0 lead slip through their fingers.

But it wasn't the longest baseball game of all time and it was nowhere near the longest game played by a Red Sox team.

In fact, the longest professional baseball game of all time was played by the Pawtucket Red Sox in 1981.

One member of that team was even hall-of-famer Wade Boggs.

After Boggs hit a game-tying home run in the 21st inning of the game against the Rochester Red Wings, he told the Providence Journal, "I didn't know if the guys on the team wanted to hug me or slug me."

The game was started at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket on April 18, 1981. It lasted 32 innings that night and was almost called off at 12:50 a.m. when the International League's curfew kicked in.

But the game continued into Easter morning on April 19.

The game wasn't officially completed until the 33rd and final inning was played on June 23.

There were just 19 fans left in the seats, according to the Telegram article about the game, when it was called in the 32nd inning at 4:07 a.m. Sunday -- because the players had to be back later that day for another game.

The Major League was on strike at the time, so the game was offered to be played at Fenway Park, but players declined as they didn't want to cross the picket line.
