BOSTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The Franklin Park Zoo announced the arrival of a red panda cub on Wednesday.
The tiny male cub was born on June 19 and stayed in a nest box with with his mother, Carys, for the first 90 days after his birth.
"We are thrilled to announce this exciting birth," said John Linehan, Zoo New England President and CEO, in a statement. "Carys has proven to be an excellent mother and she is doing everything an attentive red panda mother should."
"The cub is very curious and it is fun to watch him explore and learn new skills from his mother.," Linehan added.
The cub was recently given access to the outdoor exhibit at the zoo and is free to roam inside and outside as he pleases.
Red pandas have white and red markings and are covered with fur. They can be found in the cool temperature bamboo forests of China, the Himalayas and Myanmar, and share parts of their range with giant pandas, though the two are not closely related species. The red panda species is scarce and declining due to habitat loss in the wild.
