Police searching for driver who hit 4 kids in Stoneham, then fled

STONEHAM, Mass. — Four children were hit by a car in Stoneham around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday when they were standing in a driveway with their bicycles, according to an official release from local police. In surveillance video, the driver speeds off after the crash.

The 12- and 13-year-olds have some cuts and bruises, but they are out of the hospital and recovering.

Police are searching for the driver and the car that hit the kids – a dark colored Subaru Legacy -- near the intersection of Elm Street and MacArthur Road. Witnesses told police that one of the children’s bikes was lodged underneath the car as it drove away.

“I just looked over and I saw headlights coming right at me,” says Julia Cabral, 13, who was hit and is now on crutches.

“I heard a car swerve. And it all happened in like an instant. And I ran away cause I didn’t know if the car was going to hit me again,” Cabral says. “And then I looked down and I had like blood coming from my foot.”

The children flew several feet into a bush before the driver beeped, backed up, hit another car in the driveway and sped away, never stopping to help the kids.

“I just feel kind of in shock how someone would hit four teenaged kids and then just speed away and not even stop or ask if we’re OK,” Cabral says.

“I’m lucky that I’m OK and that I can be at home with my friends and family.”
