WEYMOUTH, Mass. — Fire crews in Weymouth have been working since Monday afternoon to put out a blaze at a Weymouth duplex apartment.

For hours, firefighters have been tackling the flames and thick smoke coming from 324 Commercial Street.

While officials confirm all residents were able to make it out safely, some pets are still unaccounted for.

“Upon arrival there was heavy fire, the whole first floor was blowing out so they hit it as fast as they could," said Weymouth Fire Chief Keith Stark.

The main issue with this fire was that it had started burning well before someone even place the 911 call. It didn’t help that the fire hydrant that once sat in front of the house had previously been taken out after a car crash.

Chief Stark says the water supply wasn’t the biggest problem - the fire had gotten too much of a head start. By the time fire crews got on scene, it was too unsafe for them to even go inside.

The duplex, which was built in 1948, was an older construction with plenty of voids, which can make firefighting a challenge, according to Chief Stark.

While preliminary information suggests the fire started on the first floor, officials continue to investigate what actually caused it.
