Two firefighters injured during 2-alarm fire in Everett

EVERETT, Mass.  - Two firefighters were injured during a fast-moving fire on Morris Street in Everett.

Everett Fire Chief Tony Carli said the fire began around 2 p.m. on Friday, quickly spreading from the basement and up through the roof.

When firefighters arrived, a woman was trapped on the third floor. Neighbors told Boston 25 News that she was ready to jump, but firefighters raised a ladder to bring her to safety.

"She was ready to jump out the window and they told her not to jump out the window," Frank Sico said. "They kept saying 'don’t jump, don’t jump.'”

When firefighters arrived, they raised a ladder to the woman and guided her to safety. Not long after, two of their own needed rescue.

“I ran over and saw the fire engine guy was on the ground and he got blown back," Sico said. "When he opened the door, it blew him back on the ground.”

Two firefighters on the first floor battling the blaze were burned.

"He came out, rolled up, and then fell off the porch onto the ground, engulfed in flames," Mitchell Donnelly, a neighbor, said.

One firefighter was treated and released from the hospital, but the other suffered from extensive burns.

"We wish our injured firefighter a speedy recovery, and I want to commend the Everett and mutual aid fire companies for their efforts fighting this fire," Carli said.

During the chaos, another rescued was needed for a dog frantically running around during the fire.

“I jumped up and came down the street and they were all just running down, throwing themselves on the grass," Carole Glennan said. "They couldn’t breathe, and the poor little dog was running around. He gave me a little bite, but it’s okay. He’s safe.”

Sky25 flew over the scene of the fire where smoke and flames were seen permeating the roof.

The State Fire Marshal's office determined the fire was started at an electrical panel.

An investigation into possible fire and building code issues is ongoing.
