Family of DJ Henry awarded $6 million

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The parents of an Easton man who was shot and killed by a New York police officer has been awarded a $6 million settlement.

On Thursday, Danroy and Angella Henry accepted an offer made by the Village of Pleasantville and Officer Aaron Hess.

Angella said she feels vindicated, but in no ways victorious.

“This is the only recourse we had left and it doesn't make us happy in any way,” she told FOX25.

DJ had been at a bar in Pleasantville, New York in 2010 when a disturbance broke out. He was in his car driving away from the area when surveillance video shows Hess step in front of the car and fire through the windshield.

Despite the gunshot wounds, DJ was pulled from the car, handcuffed, and left unattended for several minutes.

“We've known now for a while what really happened that night and it's made public and we shared that and I believe they know as well,” Angella said.

While Hess and the Village of Pleasantville are named in the settlement, an attorney says none of the money for the settlement will actually come from Hess' pocket.

“They have a minor deductible, as I understand and the money comes from the insurance carrier,” Henry family attorney Michael Sussman said.

"The Henrys have been clear from the beginning that no monetary settlement could ever replace the deep loss of their beloved son DJ. While this aspect of their lawsuits has now been resolved, they will continue to deal with their deep loss by focusing on faith, family and the important work of the DH Henry Dream Fund," a lawyer for the family said.

DJ Henry was a student at Pace University when he was shot and killed.
