Family mourns loss of teenage girl killed in car crash

METHUEN, Mass. - A local family is mourning the loss of an 18-year-old Methuen girl after she was killed in a car crash over the weekend.

Alexis Spartz was a passenger in a Lincoln LS on 495 in Haverhill  Saturday evening when the vehicle went out of control and rolled over.

Spartz and the driver became stuck and were extricated from the vehicle by two off-duty Haverhill firefighters who were driving by at the time of the crash.

Both were transported to Lawrence General Hospital, but Spartz eventually succumbed to her injuries and was later pronounced deceased.

The driver, a 19-year-old girl, was transported to Tufts Medical Center for further treatment of her injuries. No further details of her condition have been released yet.

Spartz's family said it hadn't even been a year since she graduated high school and that she had the whole world in front of her.

The 18-year-old graduated from Methuen High School in 2017 and was working toward joining the Army National Guard.

Spartz's family said they are devastated and sent the following statement to Boston 25 News:

"Alexis was a shining example of unlimited potential and possibilities. She was the light of our life and anyone that knew her or had interaction with her was impacted in a positive way."

A family friend started a GoFundMe page in an effort to raise money for Spartz's burial costs. By Monday night, the page had raised nearly $5,000, which you can contribute to by clicking on this link.

It's not clear what caused the crash - it remains under investigation.
