Fall River City Council to vote on suspending mayor amid federal charges

FALL RIVER, Mass. — The Fall River City Council will vote Tuesday night on whether to suspend Mayor Jasiel Correia.

Correia is facing federal charges of wire fraud and filing false tax returns.

He's refused to step down from office, adamantly saying he has done nothing wrong, but a provision would allow the council to suspend him if they feel he cannot perform the duties of his office.

Some residents have been pushing to remove Correia. The council met last week, but the special session ended without any action on removing him due to two councilors who objected the motion.

They want to give voters the option to recall Correia on November's ballot. If the question is approved, voters would choose a new mayor on the same day.
