Extra security in place for Boston's Caribbean Festival

BOSTON — Boston police are asking the thousands of people expected at Saturday’s Caribbean Festival to respect the city.

Police said the annual parade marks one of the most violent times in the city all year.

When the parade kicks-off at noon, police said officers will have already been patrolling the area for nearly 24 hours.

Last year, police investigated two killings, two shootings, six stabbings and 10 assaults at or near the festivities.

“We pull officers from all across the city,” Boston police Commissioner William Evans said. “We hire additional officers, so we are doing our best and we’ve been doing a lot of outreach during the week.”

Festival organizers said the event has been unfairly tarnished with a reputation for violence.

They’re frustrated by visitors who come to carnival intending to harm instead of celebrating Caribbean culture.
