WOBURN, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Police say two dozen headstones were vandalized at a cemetery in Woburn overnight.
A groundskeeper opened the gates at Woodbrook Cemetery at about 6:45 a.m. Saturday to find at least 24 headstones had been damaged. Some were broken in half, while others were knocked over.
Most of the headstones are older, some dating back more than 100 years.
Investigators believe the vandalism took place after closing Friday night. The damage was confined mostly to the middle of the cemetery.
"It's heartless," said Joan Jackowitcz, of Woburn. "It's flag Day, it's Father's Day weekend. How disrespectful. There's no reason."
Cemetery operators say the damage will be expensive to fix.
Police are investigating and actively looking for the person or persons who did this. Anyone with information is asked to contact Woburn police.
