Dog hit by train while saving its owner is back home

The local pitbull who was injured while saving her owner from being hit by a freight train is back home.

Lilly the pitbull dragged her owner, Christine Spain, to safety after she passed out on the train tracks in Shirley around midnight on May 4. Spain wasn't hit, but the train engineer couldn't avoid hitting Lilly.

The 8-year-old dog lost her right leg, broke her pelvis, and suffered other injuries in the rescue. She was released from the hospital on Saturday and lovingly welcomed home.

Lilly's inspiring story prompted donations that took care of her entire $15,000 medical bill. Donations reached just over $76,000. The MSPCA says additional money will go to other animals that need medical treatment.
