A church's nativity scene is making a bold statement this Christmas season.
St. Susanna's Parish in Dedham set up its nativity, but behind baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph, they've placed a list of some of the deadliest mass shootings in our country's history.
Father Stephen Josoma says the move was meant to get people talking and motivated to do whatever they can do get this to stop.
"There's cities, nursing homes, coffee shops, military installations, churches, theaters," said Josoma.
A list of the country's most deadliest shootings is a sobering reminder of gun violence in this country in the unlikeliest places.
"This is not the picture of Christmas peace we want to have in people's minds for years to come. It can't be this forever, it just has to change," said Josoma.
The display went up over the weekend and so far, it's resonating with parishioners.
"You can interpret it in different ways. It's just to draw people in, make people think," said Pat Ferrone.
"Reading each sign, it gives you sadness inside and you hope that we don't have to add anymore," said Lisa Mercuri.
Above the manger, a banner says "If only you knew the things that make for peace."
The hope is that those who see it will realize peace on Earth starts with the decision to work for it.
"Change your heart, first of all, then work for peace. Not just sitting back and accepting the fact that this is gonna continue again and again."
The people who put up the display are aware not everyone is going to like it, but they hope they'll keep an open mind.
