David Henneberry, man who found Marathon bomber in boat, dies

WATERTOWN, Mass. — David Henneberry, the man who found Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev hiding in his boat during the intense manhunt in 2013, has died.

Henneberry called 911 on April 19, 2013, hours after a shelter-in-place order was lifted by investigators who had been searching for Tsarnaev. He said he noticed something strange with the boat he had in the yard of his Franklin Street home when he went outside to smoke a cigarette.

“I have a boat in my yard,” he told 911 operators. “There’s blood all over the inside. There’s a person in the boat.”

That person was Tsarnaev, and that ended one of the most intense manhunts in recent memory.

According to his obituary on Legacy.com, Henneberry died on Wednesday.

His wake will be held in the Lehman, Reen & McNamara Funeral Home on Chestnut Hill Avenue in Brighton on Oct. 6 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a private interment to follow.

In lieu of flowers, his family is requesting people make donations in his name to the American Lung Association, 460 Totten Pond Road, Suite 400, Waltham, Mass.
