The shelter in place ordered at Dartmouth College on Friday night after a single gunshot was fired in the area has been lifted.

According to the university and Hanover Police, a man was shot inside a study room on the school's campus.

Hanover Police said they arrested 22-year-old Lebanon native Gage Young for second-degree assault in connection to the investigation.

Police say preliminary investigations show Young was traveling through the town when he fired a handgun at a 19-year-old victim, hitting him and causing serious bodily injury.

Police say the victim is in stable condition.

The college said the gunshot was fired in the area of School Street and West Wheelock Street in Hanover.

Dartmouth College updated the situation 21 minutes later, saying a non-Dartmouth student was shot around 9:50 p.m. at the Christian Science Reading Room on School Street.
