ATHOL, Mass. — Local and state authorities are investigating after a woman's body was found near the Athol wastewater treatment plant.
The Northwestern County District Attorney's Office tells Boston 25 News that a woman's body was found near the entrance to the wastewater plant on Jones Street early Monday morning.
Athol Police, Mass. State Police, and the DA are investigating the death, which is considered "criminal in nature."
"It's really, scary my daughter walks around here all the time and she's only 17," said one neighbor.
The Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death.
Neighbors believe police are looking for a possible suspect after police asked them where they were overnight into this morning.
"It's a little creepy, it's a little creepy now because to know something happened out here," said Missi LeClaire, a neighbor. "Nothing like this happens here so we probably stumbled across her like three times last night or walked by and we didn't see anything."
It is still unclear how the woman died.
No additional information was released.
