DA: Officials investigating apparent murder of elderly man in Groveland

GROVELAND, Mass. — Officials are investigating a murder after an 82-year-old man was found dead just before midnight on Friday in Groveland, according to a release from the Essex County District Attorney's Office.

Law enforcement identified the victim as Patsy Schena, 82, of Groveland. He was pronounced dead at his home at 20 Governors Rd. in the town; he had sustained multiple wounds, police said.

"This is a shocking and brutal crime," said Essex DA Jonathan Blodgett in the release. "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr. Schena as they try to comprehend this horrific event."

Groveland Police are investigating the apparent homicide along with the Essex State Police Detective Unit. The investigation is ongoing.

"Mr. Schena was the town building inspector for many years. He was well-known and respected in the community," Groveland Police Chief Jeff Gillen said in the release. "We are deeply saddened and shocked by this loss and our thoughts are with his family."

Chief Gillen added that Schena’s murder is the first homicide in the town since 1992.
