MILLBURY, Mass. - Emergency crews recovered a body while searching for a missing kayaker in Millbury on Friday afternoon.
The Worcester County DA's office said one person was found dead at Dorothy Pond.
Boston 25 News spoke to a man at the scene who said his nephew is the one missing.
Joe Coggans, the victim's stepfather, said the man went into the water to find a tackle box that was dropped in the water on Thursday.
"I can see those guys going in after a tackle box – it’s like I’ll get you another one," said Coggans.
The man said his son was also in the kayak, but was rescued and taken to the hospital.
Eight divers from the regional dive team went into the water to help find the victim. They spent about an hour searching until they found his body about 115 feet off shore.
This is the fifth accidental drowning the regional dive team has responded to in just a few days.
“You have to respect the water and they do my stepson has been fishing in this water and he’s very careful – what happened is truly what it appears to be a bad accident," said Coggans.
The victim, a man in his mid-thirties, was out on a kayak with his cousin trying to find a takcle box they had dropped in the water the day before.
“Visibility was very very poor we probably could only see six inches in front couldn’t see anything at all," said Millbury Police Chief Donald Desorcy.
The victim's name has not been released until all of his family can be notified.
