Community honors state trooper killed in horrific crash

The driver of the Nissan, David Njuguna, also suffered serious injuries. He's being criminally summonsed with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and failing to stay within marked lanes. It's possible further charges will be sought.

CHARLTON, Mass. — "Today, we pray for him. We pray for them," said Mass State Police Colonel Richard McKeon.

State Police were on scene for most of the day investigating the crash.

Clardy was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and joined force in April 2005.

"He was extremely well liked by the people he worked with. He had a reputation of a hard worker, a good trooper and a great man," said McKeon.

“Lauren and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Trooper Thomas Clardy who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones, fellow troopers and the entire law enforcement community during this very difficult time," said Gov.Charlie Baker

Trooper Clardy had taken on a extra shift Wednesday when he was on the Mass Pike. He wasn't supposed to start his shift until 3 p.m.
