BOSTON — Encore Boston Harbor, is set to open on June 23 - but legal issues could mean a delay for Wynn Resorts' newest hotel and casino.

The potential delay disclosure happened during the quarterly earnings call when, for the first time, Wynn Resorts CEO Matt Maddox publicly put into question the opening date for Encore.

"The construction is almost essentially complete," said Maddox.

Maddox spoke glowingly of the progress of Encore, saying 90% of staffing is either on board or what he described as "within offer."

"I don’t know if the opening date will be June 23rd or a week or two later, because we’re going to make sure that it’s flawless," said Maddox. "And clearly the regulatory complexity we’ve been through has been a challenge."

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission recently levied a $35 million fine against Wynn for its alleged handling of sexual misconduct allegations against founder Steve Wynn, who is no longer with the casino giant.

Maddox said the company has been evaluating its legal options, something that has been taking up a lot of their time and attention.

"We’re now doubling back," said Maddox. "The team we have on the ground there is terrific. We’re ready to open. We may give ourselves another week, we may not, but the property looks great."

Boston 25 News has reached out to the company early Friday morning to find out when a decision would be made on a potential delay.
