Comm Ave Bridge replacement to trigger heavy traffic

BOSTON — Traffic is expected to be heavy on the Mass Pike and other roads due to the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge replacement project.

According to MassDOT, the 2018 construction shutdown will take place from Thursday, July 26 to Saturday, August 11 to replace the westbound side of the Comm Ave Bridge.

The construction will affect the following roads and facilities: Commonwealth Avenue between Brighton Avenue/Packard’s Corner and Kenmore Square, the Boston University (BU) Bridge, I-90 (Mass Pike), the MBTA Green B Line, Bus Routes 47 and CT2, Commuter Rail Worcester Line, and Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited route.

Crews will start demolishing the westbound side of the bridge on the morning of Saturday, July 28.

The MBTA Commuter Rail Worcester/Framingham line and the Amtrak Lake Shore Limited line will be replaced by bus shuttles throughout the weekend of July 28 - July 29 as well as the following weekend.

The new westbound side of the bridge will then be constructed with steel beams, prefabricated concrete deck panels, and asphalt by August 11.

The $110 million bridge replacement is scheduled for completion by 2019.

With that in mind, MassDOT has partnered with the City of Boston to provide additional temporary Blue Bikes at the station at Silver Way on Comm Ave.
