BOSTON — Our Coffee with Candidates series returns with conversations with the five major candidates seeking to be the next mayor of Boston.
Our mayoral series continues with Boston 25 News Anchor Kerry Kavanaugh’s conversation with Boston City Councilor, Andrea Campbell. They recently met up at the Ripple Café in Dorchester.
Campbell grew up in Roxbury. She was the first black woman to serve as Boston’s city council president. She overcame a lot of loss and adversity since a very young age to get there.
Her father was incarcerated the first 8 years of her life. Her mother died in a car crash while driving to visit the father in prison when she was eight months old. Her twin brother, Andre, died in state custody awaiting trial at the age of 29.
She talked to Kavanaugh about how adversity has shaped her candidacy.
“I’m the only candidate in this race that has probably lived every inequity the city is grappling with, but also a story that talks about the possibilities of this city, you know, growing up poor with like, with nothing, and yet this city gave me everything I would need to go off to Princeton University to be successful.”
Campbell says she is more than just a story. In our extended version she talks about her record as city councilor and her plans for the city of Boston.
