WILMINGTON, Mass. — A 3-year-old girl was among two people injured in a serious crash on Interstate 93 in Wilmington on Thursday afternoon, state police said.
Around 4:20 p.m., state police said a 2001 BMW 325 wagon headed southbound on I-93 hit a guardrail, flipped over and ended up on the northbound side of the highway in the area of Exit 33.
The girl was ejected during the crash was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
She remains in serious but stable condition.
The adult driver, a 32-year-old woman, was also injured. She was taken by ambulance to the same hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Both victims are from Chelsea.
A preliminary investigation found that the driver was driving the BMW southbound and for reasons still under investigation, the BMW veered to its left, hit the guardrail and rolled over it, coming to rest on its roof partially in the left northbound lane.
The crash caused the highway to be shut down in both directions while emergency crews headed to the scene.
Two child car seats were located inside the vehicle; whether the child was appropriately restrained in a seat remains part of the ongoing investigation.
The crash remains under investigation.
