Charlestown's only post office being forced out

BOSTON — Charlestown residents are shocked by the news that their only post office is closing.

The USPS says the owner of the Bunker Hill Mall told them when their lease is up at the end of this year, they have to get out.

The post office has served the community at that location since 1999 but is now being kicked out so the CVS next door can expand into the space.

"What is the community of Charlestown gonna do without no post office? I think that’s totally wrong," said Charlestown resident Shawnee Meredith.

In a statement, the postal service said:

"We will continue to press forward toward a solution that will provide our Charlestown neighbors with the first class service they've come to expect."

But many worry the post office's new location will pose a challenge.

"We don’t have a car, we travel by bus and train, it would be hard for us, and we had kids, and we are single moms, so how would we travel to another post office?" said Meredith.

A spokeswoman for Bunker Hill mall's parent company New England Development told Boston 25 News this isn't the only victim. The post office in Kenmore Square is also closing.
