Carlisle boy dies in skiing accident in Montana

BIG SKY, Mont. — A 9-year-old Carlisle boy has died in a skiing accident in Montana, according to a release from the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened on February 19 at Big Sky Ski Resort, after the boy’s father reported the child missing at 2:51 p.m.

The victim, identified as 9-year-old William Shaw, was skiing with his family and went missing near the junction of Middle Road and Lobo Ski Run.

Shortly after Shaw’s father made the report, the child was found in a tree well on a steep slope, and the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office determined he died from blunt force trauma.

Big Sky, Mont. is located within Gallatin County in the southern part of the state bordering Wyoming.

Shaw was a third grader in Carlisle Public Schools, and was known as a role model to other students.

"William was a sweet and engaging boy and our entire community is deeply saddened and heartbroken by this tragic event," the school's superintendent wrote. "He and his family are cherished members of our Carlisle community.  All of our thoughts, prayers and efforts are being offered to his family, friends and everyone who has been touched by William's life."

The superintendent said they will have resources ready to assist the community during the difficult time.

According to Shaw's obituary, a celebration of life will be held next Saturday at a nearby church with a reception afterwards at Carlisle Public School.

Everyone is asked to wear green to the event, signifying Shaw's favorite color.
