Cape fish market to release 21-pound lobster formerly meant to be raffle prize

ORLEANS (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) A raffle benefitting the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has been revised after a public outcry over the living raffle prize.

The winner of the raffle, which is being run by Capt'n Elmer's Seafood Restaurant and Fish Market, was to win a massive 21-pound lobster. On Friday, the Orleans-based fish market released a statement explaining their decision to not go forward with raffling off the giant crustacean.

"The Board of Directors of Good Seas Inc., d/b/a Capt'n Elmer's Seafood Restaurant and Fish Market, have concluded that the lobster will be released back into the waters of Cape Cod. It would be contrary to the personal ethics of the individual Board members as well as the business principles of the company as a whole to allow the future of this noble lobster to be determined by chance," says a fish market spokesperson in a press release.

The raffle will still continue as planned, but the winner will have the choice between receiving 21 pounds of retail size lobsters or going out with the release team as they set the lobster free.

Tickets for the raffle will remain on sale until noon on Sunday.
