SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) - A South Yarmouth man has been charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence after hitting two pedestrians with his van.
Paul Dennehy, 55, struck and killed a man and seriously injured a woman running across Route 28. Police say the accident happened at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Kevin Regan and Lynda Cavanaugh, both 62 and from Westfield, were struck by a 2009 Ford Econovan driven by Dennehy.
Regan was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis where he was pronounced dead; Cavanaugh was flown to a Boston hospital by a MedFlight helicopter. Police said the pair tried to run across the road in the fog and were wearing dark clothes.
Dennehy will be arraigned in Barnstable District Court Monday morning.
The accident is the second fatal car crash this weekend in the Cape Cod community. A Dennis man is facing manslaughter, speeding and other charges after his passenger died in a car crash early Saturday morning.
Police say James D. Rebello III, 33, had been speeding on North Main Street sometime before 1:30 a.m. when his 1998 Audi A4 sedan struck a curb and a large boulder, becoming airborne and striking a pine tree.
The passenger in the vehicle, Steven T. Berrio, 28, of Harwich, was ejected through the windshield of the car, which he owned. He was pronounced dead at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
Rebello, who suffered broken bones and was also sent to the hospital, is expected to be arraigned Monday in Barnstable District Court.
