CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Firefighters in Cambridge worked for nearly five hours Monday morning to contain a fire that burned two buildings and displaced about 19 people, according to fire officials.

Acting Cambridge Fire Chief Gerard Mahoney said a call for a fire at 6 Hunting St. came in around 5:41 a.m. on Monday morning, followed by a call for a fire at the building adjacent to it on Cambridge Street.

Heavy smoke could be seen coming from the third floor of the building on Hunting Street, which houses the Sunset Cafe on the first floor and residential units on the upper floors. Mahoney said the fire originated in the basement and spread from there.

All residents made it out of the buildings safely, Mahoney said, and about 19 people were displaced -- 17 of them from the building on Cambridge Street.

A third alarm was struck about 15 minutes into the response and firefighters were evacuated from the buildings. A fourth alarm was struck at around 6:36 a.m. as flames continued to rip through the structure.

The Cambridge Fire Department said in a tweet that displaced residents can go to the Frisoli Youth Center, at 6 Willow St., for assistance.

Firefighters worked to contain the fire through the morning, finally containing it just before 10:30 a.m.

The Fire Chief told us one firefighter needed stitches to his hand and some other suffered minor injuries, mainly from the icy conditions.
