Update, 9:02 a.m. - The MBTA says regular service on the Red Line's Ashmont branch has resumed and shuttle buses will be phased out.
Original story
A derailed train in Ashmont is affecting the MBTA Red Line service between Ashmont and JFK/UMass Tuesday morning.
The MBTA tweeted at 5:47 a.m. that shuttle buses will replace service in both directions between Ashmont and JFK/UMass on the Red Line due to a "derailed train in the Ashmont yard."
The MBTA says riders should expect delays while shuttle buses are put into service.
Crews can be seen working near the derailed train; the MBTA said in a tweet that they are working to re-rail the train.
MBTA spokesperson Joe Pesaturo said one car on a six-car train derailed in the yard. The train was not in service at the time and was not carrying any passengers when it derailed while it was being moved, he said, and the cause is under investigation.
The train car was re-railed before 8 a.m., according to an update tweeted by MassDOT spokesperson Jacquelyn Goddard. Shuttle bus service will continue as crews make additional repairs to the track and third rail, she said.
