BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The bridge connecting Moon Island and Long Island in Boston Harbor was ordered closed Thursday due to concerns over its structural integrity, and Friday officials announced that the bridge may be closed for "an extended period of time."
There are no permanent homes on Long Island, but the Boston Public Health Commission does have a shelter facility there that houses over 400 people.
Everyone who was on the island Wednesday was evacuated by bus and set up with temporary housing.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh's office released a statement on the closure that read in part: "There was not one incident, injury, or any bridge collapse that led to this decision. The decision to close the bridge was made in an abundance of caution following long-running concerns about the structural integrity of the bridge. The bridge is likely to remain closed for an extended period of time."
