Classes canceled at North Quincy High School after odor detected in building

QUINCY, Mass. — North Quincy High School has been evacuated and school was canceled for the day while first responders investigate a strange odor in the building.

The incident was reported around 9:00 Thursday morning.

Students were initially evacuated during the incident. About 30 minutes later, school officials announced the school building was closed for the day.

Dr. Richard DeCristofaro, the Superintendent of the Quincy School Department, released the following statement:

"There was a credible odor of gas behind the building at North Quincy High School on the street. No gas was suspected to be coming from within the building, but as National Grid and Quincy Fire Dept. arrived, they felt strongly that the gas/odor was coming in to the building. Concerned for the safety of the students and staff, the decision was made to evacuate the building for the day and allow the companies to work towards locating the gas leak and doing any necessary repairs."

Officials with the gas company are also at the school investigating.

The department said it expects North Quincy High School will resume a normal school day on Friday.
