Six Braintree police officers received the state’s highest and most prestigious law enforcement award Friday.
Police officers from across Massachusetts were honored with the Medal of Honor during the 35th annual George L. Hanna Awards ceremony at the State House.
The Hanna Awards are named in memory of State Trooper George L. Hanna, who was shot and killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop in Auburn on February 26, 1983.
The awards honor police officers who in the last year have shown exemplary acts of bravery on the job.
The Braintree police officers -- William Cushing, Donald Delaney, Paul Hamilton, John Hurley, Ryan McHugh and Stephen Wallace -- were fired upon while serving a warrant to a man staying at the Motel 6 in May 2017. Delaney was shot in the head. Despite his injuries, he returned fire. The suspect was killed in the exchange of gunfire.
Delaney has since recovered and returned to work.
Everett Police Sergeant Lawrence Jedrey, Chelsea Police Officer Robert Hammond, MBTA Transit Police Officer James Davie, Worcester Police Officer Robert Sansoucy and Massachusetts State Troopers Michael Caranfa, Robert Holland, George Katsarakes, David Nims and Daniel Purtell each received the Medal of Valor, which is the second highest award given.
The officers also paid tribute to Yarmouth Police Sergeant Sean Gannon and Weymouth Police Sergeant Michael Chesna, who were killed in the line of duty this year.
