Body found in Roxbury identified as missing Wentworth student

A missing 19-year-old college student was found dead in Roxbury Sunday, according to Boston Police.

Police said they responded to Terrace Street in Roxbury around 8:08 a.m. Sunday morning and found a "non-viable adult male victim," who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was identified as 19-year-old Maximillian Carbone, a student at the Wentworth Institute of Technology, who police had issued a missing person alert for Saturday night.

The cause of Carbone's death is under investigation, but detectives said they do not believe it was suspicious. Authorities and school officials believe alcohol was involved in the incident to some degree.

"I know they were at a gathering and I know alcohol was involved," said Bill Powers, the Wentworth Director of Public Safety, of the incident. "To what extent, I really don't know."

Carbone's family released a statement Sunday afternoon, remembering their son and asking for privacy throughout the process.

"We ask the media to respect our privacy during this difficult time. Our hearts are broken. Max was a sweet, happy and loving son, brother and friend. He was a hardworking student who cared about helping people. He will be missed dearly. We want to thank the Boston and Nahant Police and the Wentworth Community.

Police said Carbone had last been seen early Saturday morning between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. at a party on Alleghney Street.

Drew McGlynn's Mission Hill apartment building sits at the top of the rocky slope, where police sources say they’re looking into the possibility that Carbone may have slipped and fell. Carbone's body was discovered Sunday morning near the bottom of the hill, hidden in the rugged terrain of brush and rubble.

"He must've crossed the fence, it's a pretty sheer drop off; he must've just slipped," McGylnn, a Northeastern student, said of Carbone. "The cops were at my place this morning looking at stuff. It's really scary."

McGlynn did not personally know Carbone, but the 19-year-old’s disappearance and death hit close to home.

Police say Carbone went missing after attending a gathering with friends on the hill Friday night not far from where his body was found.

Carbone's family gathered on Terrace Street in Boston Sunday morning, and a member of the search team told Boston 25 News a body was found in the area Sunday morning.

School officials at Wentworth have invited students, faculty and any who knew Carbone to a tribute at the school's Center for Engineering at noon on Monday.

The Public Safety Department for the Wentworth Institute of Technology confirmed Sunday morning around 9:20 a.m. that the search had been called off.

Around 10:22 a.m. Sunday, the medical examiner arrived on scene in the area where search crews were looking for Carbone.

Early Sunday morning, investigators said the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing assisted in their search.

Originally from the small north shore community of Nahant, Carbone graduated from Swampscott High in 2017 before embarking on a new chapter at Wentworth.

Grief counselors will be on hand at Wentworth while Swampscott Public Schools also announced that it will have grief counselors at the middle and high schools tomorrow.
