AUBURN, Mass. — Police are investigating after a body was found lying in the road on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Auburn Wednesday night.

Massachusetts State Police said they responded to a call reporting a body in the roadway at Exit 10 on the westbound side of the Mass. Pike around 10 p.m. and found a deceased victim with "severe injuries."

Worcester County District Attorney said in a statement that the victim's identification has not been determined but they are asking for anyone with information or may have seen something to contact investigators.

No unattended vehicles were found near the body, no overpasses are nearby and there were no reports of any pedestrians on the road, MSP spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.

Multiple lanes were closed following the discovery as investigators tried to determine how the person ended up in the roadway, which snarled traffic. The scene was cleared around 2 a.m.

Anyone with information is asked to call the State Police Troop C headquarters at 508-829-8326 or Auburn Police at 508-832-7777.

The death is being investigated by the State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services and Auburn Police.
