Block Island couple dies in plane crash on I-93 in NH

An 83-year-old husband and wife from Block Island, RI died in a plane crash on Interstate 93 in New Hampshire on Thursday.

The crash was reported just after 1 p.m. near Exit 10 in Hooksett.

Hooksett, N.H. fire officials confirm Herman and Doris Hassinger died in the single-engine plane crash. Video from Skyfox showed the plane in the breakdown lane of the highway. It had crashed into a guard rail.

Investigators tell FOX 25 the plane departed from Nashua and was heading to Laconia. They believe the plane was flying south when it struck a light pole adjacent to the highway. The collision caused the plane to nose dive onto 93 north at the mile marker 26.2. One of the Hassingers was ejected from the plane on impact.

Pieces of the plane were scattered on the off-ramp as well as on the highway. The ramp from I-93 north to I-293 south remained closed on Thursday afternoon and I-93 was down to one lane of travel. Officials asked the public to avoid the area and seek alternate routes for the evening commute.

A report released by the FAA shortly after the crash shows that the plane, which is registered in Herman Hassinger's name, was involved in another crash in 2010 when its landing gear failed in Nashua.

The FAA is asking for anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them.
